What About Polio?

What about Polio?
No one can deny how amazing that vaccine was for the world, right? Not so much when you really understand the history of polio:

Most people really don't realize the true history of polio, we are only familiar with what we saw on TV when the media promoted the vaccine- such as photos of paralyzed children in iron lung who later died. The Merck manual says that more than 90% of polio cases simply resembled the stomach flu, another 5% had abortive polio which included a sore throat, and another 3% had non-paralytic polio which includes some limb weakness and numbness. This 98% of people infected with polio had a complete recovery (and have life long immunity) and the symptoms resolved within 10-14 days. Slightly less than 2% had paralytic polio. This 2% can be divided into 3 sub-categories. Among those 3 sub-categories 50% had a complete recovery rate. The other 50% contained a mixture of results - some had a longer recovery and some did not fully recover. This who did not fully recover suffered from some paralysis and sadly, some also died. Less than .04% of the people that contracted polio ha Bulbar Polio which is the horrific kind most people think of when they hear the word "polio".

Charts show a decline from the peak of polio in 1954, before vaccine trials began on April 12, 1955. After the vaccine trials started, an increase in Polio cases was reported in Vermont (up 266%), Rhode Island (up 454%) and Massachusetts (up 643%). Idaho and Utah even banned the vaccine because prior to the vaccine trials there had never been a case reported in those states and once they started vaccinating, people were getting infected.
In June of 1955, just weeks after massive vaccination started, 2 of 8 lots of vaccines were administered which released live virus, infecting 40,000 people with polio - 164 were permanently paralyzed and 10 died. (Am J Hyg. 1963:29-60)

Why were reports showing the vaccines helped? Because it would have been embarrassing for the CDC to admit it was a failure! They would have also taken a hit financially. So they changed diagnosis parameters of polio and the definition of epidemic. Prior to 1954 an epidemic was defined as 6/100,000 diagnosed, after 1955 it was changed to 35/100,000 diagnosed. Also, in the beginning limb weakness lasting 3 days was diagnosed as polio. It was later changed to symptoms lasting 60 days, instead of 3. Since 98% of cases recovered within 10-14 days (according to the Merck manual) then the majority of cases were no longer being diagnosed, but the vaccine was applauded has having been very effective. I guess it is easy to make it look that way when you change the diagnosis parameters, and change the definition of epidemic. By the time Sabin's vaccine for polio came out in 1961, the disease had almost been eradicated.

The United States has been polio-free since 1979 - with the exception of cases resulting from the vaccine. WHO certified the Western Hemisphere Polio-free sine 1994, after no cases were reported since 1991. Surgeon General David Satcher, MD MMWR 1994; 43:720-2

Why are we still giving our kids 5 doses of polio vaccine starting at 2 months of age???

On National Vaccination Day about 430,000,000 people are vaccinated worldwide and it is reported that 1 case per million vaccinated contracts Polio from the vaccine. The country with the highest incidence of Polio is Nigeria, with 178 cases reported as of 2003 and they now refuse the vaccine. Why? Because that number is insignificant compared to the number of people dying of malnutrition, dirty water, and lack of housing. They said that if people want to bring in $$$$, bring it to help their needs like clean water and food, etc. (Not for a disease that 98% of people recover from in 10-14 days)

Other Factors In The Decline of Polio:
Polio is a butt-to-mouth disease. It was most common in children. Children are more likely to have polio than adults because they lack the inhibitions adults have. If a child has an itch, there is nothing to stop them from sticking their hand right down their pants to scratch it. Within minutes, their hands are in their mouths. Polio is spread from feces to mouth. Right around the time the vaccine was introduced, the United States was also improving plumbing and water supply for sanitary hand-washing and sewage removal. Completely unrelated to vaccines or disease in any way, the show "Filthy Cities" gives amazing insight into the living conditions that were present prior to adequate plumbing and sanitization, and unintentionally reveals how pivotal the introduction of such sanitization was changing the course of disease!

Another factor was DDT. This insecticide had widespread use in the 1940's and we later learned that is was causing harm to humans, animals, and our
environment. The symptoms people were experiencing were nearly identical in some cases to Polio. Since Polio was only diagnosed clinically, it is more than likely that many cases of DDT poisoning were misdiagnosed as Polio. The regulations of DDT started in the late 50's and early 60's, also coinciding with the decline of Polio cases.

What about safety? What's the harm in just getting the vaccine "in case"?
Here are the ingredients we give to American children in IPV: 2-phenoxyethanol, formaldehyde, neomycin, streptomycin, polymyxin B, monkey kidney cells, Eagle MEM modified medium, calf serum protein, Medium 199

"The most common contaminant virus found in bovine serum is a member of the pestivirus family called bovine diarrhea virus (BVDV). All commercially available bovine (cow) serum is thought to be contaminated with this virus. Vaccines grown on contaminated cells may, in turn, have viral contaminants in the final product. The animal viruses can combine with viruses in the vaccine and become an active, unique disease." REF:J Infect Dis. 1996 Dec;174(6): 1324-7. Contamination of commercially available fetal bovine sera with bovine diarrhea virus genomes: implications for the hepatitis V virus in cell cultures. (Via Saying No To Vaccines, by Dr. Sherri Tenpenny)

Besides the fact that we all know formaldehyde is a carcinogen (cancer-causing agent), the original vaccine contained SV40 monkey virus linked to cancer. We could dissect the other ingredients on the list, but we'll just move on. Would I risk cancer which now is at an astonishing rate of 1/2.5 people over a disease that is not around and for which 98% of people recover in 14 days? NO! How many cancer patients recover in 10-14 days? NONE!
This is an excerpt from the IPV package insert:
"deaths have occurred in temporal association after vaccination of infants with IPV."
I would never risk cancer or death from a vaccine overhear of a disease I will never be exposed to. Who would???

*Note, special thanks to the work of Dr. Sherri Tenpenny who presented much of this information in her amazing and must-see video "Vaccines: The Risks, The Benefits, The Choices"

Another element is the "coincidence" of mass DDT use and the increased morbidity of polio. Polio was a common benign GI virus until mass spraying of DDT. The decrease in polio morbidity (paralysis) is more closely linked with cessation of DDT than introduction of the polio vaccine.

What you forget to mention is that polio affected 20million people world wide, (During the height of the epidemics, in the USA alone, over 35,000 people were stricken with paralytic polio every year) and the millions today that are still suffering from the after effects of polio known as post polio syndrome. And also, that because of the vaccine, 10 million people are today walking that otherwise may have been stricken by the disease. I'm curious to know, if there was a vaccine for cancer, alzheimers, MS, Parkinsons disease etc.. would anyone take it even if there was a miniscule element of risk?

Thanks for your comment, but if I believed that to be true I would have mentioned it. Your statement "10 million people are walking today that may have been stricken by the disease" is scientifically unprovable.

It seems that when you process the word vaccine, you equate that to immunity which is not the case. Vaccines cause the diseases you mentioned, not prevent them. After years of study and research I have no confidence in a vaccines ability to prevent disease and absolute certainty that they destroy lives and damage people in nearly every case.

I can certainly attest to that. I happen to be one the many people who contracted Polio or Guillain Barre, from the oral vaccine back in 1963. I have also suffered auto immune issues, since then, along with Hashoimotos and Fibromyalgia. All of my siblings suffer some form of auto immune problem.

I, for one, would not. There is enough evidence of neurological damage created by vaccines and other factors created by man that have caused damage to humans, even at the DNA level.

How can you be so sure that it's the virus, not environmental contaminants? Or is it the Polio vaccine that is spreading Polio? If Polio is so strife then why in 1955 and 1979 did WHO declare Polio eradicated in the Western hemisphere? Vaccines for Alzheimer's, MS, etc.? Are these man made (antibiotic and vaccines)? Research but avoid "repeating" Klara. I diagnose and care for vaccine induced injuries.

No, no and no. As a polio survivor who did not die from polio, no I did not make a complete recovery, I know it could have been prevented. Why did I get polio? NO Vaccine at the time. How am I now? Now, I have Post Polio Syndrome where the damage done by the initial infection shows up years later. You are talking about something you know only a little bit about. Just enough to frighten people but not enough to do some real good.

Thanks, Joyce for your comment. I am always eager to learn more. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions? You can answer here, privately, or not at all and I won't take offense, but I really do want to learn as much as I can.
1. When were diagnosed with Polio (what year and how old were you?)
2. How were you diagnosed? Stool sample or clinical evaluation?
3. How many years later were you diagnosed with Post Polio Syndrome?
4. Are they still able to find Polio virus antibodies in your blood or virus in your stool?
5. How did they diagnose the PPS to rule out another form of Acute Placid Paralysis?

Thanks so much! I truly wish nothing but the best for you.

I loved reading this article and read something like it before, and more recently regarding DDT and extreme 'clean up' at the time of the 'epidemic'.. I am trying to obtain real studies to educate a couple of friends and for my own references, and was hoping you would be able to please reference the tesearch and stats used so i can share it?
I have read similar thibgs sbout vaccines and measles and whooping cough, but dont hsve those documents any longer either!
I would be so grateful for your support

Hi Tamara,
Sorry for the delay in replying, I'm not sure how I missed this. Yes, I agree, there were other factors in addition to the actual virus that had very similar symptoms as Polio and it was probably very often misdiagnosed. There is a whole category of illnesses that can be various types of disease called AFP, or acute flaccid paralysis. Since Polio can only be accurately diagnosed from stool samples (that is my understanding, as opposed to clinical "guessing") it was probably often diagnosed as Polio even though it was DDT poisoning, etc. And yes, I should add to the post about the massive clean up and improvements in plumbing, sewer, septic, etc!

It is hard to find any "studies" on that though. For some reason, in order to publish studies it seems so complicated as opposed to just reviewing history.

I had Polio in 1950 at the age of 7½. I' 73 now but, at the time, our GP thought it to be Diphtheria. and prescribed Penicillin. After a short spell in bed at home my condition worsened; I couldn't swallow (drinks would run out of my nose) and I was admitted to a childrens' hospital and placed in an Iron Lung. After some 6 weeks in the hospital I was sent to convalesce for 6 momths. The only effects I currently experience are difficuty of swallowing certain things, which seem to be worsening as I get older.

Thank you for sharing! I love learning people's experience with Polio! What you are telling me coincides with what I have learned that it was a clinical diagnosis, because the GP first thought it was something else. If he had been able to test your stools, they would have gotten proper diagnosis right away to confirm Polio. I also wonder if DDT at the time partially impacted your condition.

Have you tried any supplemental therapies to aid your swallowing? I recently read something that makes me think Vitamins A and C might be helpful and I know that magnesium is a great mineral for the nerves. You might want to seek out an ND or Osteopath to see if they could help, or even a Nutritional Microscopist to get your blood analyzed to see if there could be something helpful to keep you healthy as you age.

Great job on the article! I was surprised to see you even included pestiviruses. I love studying about the early history of vaccines and have a few things I would like to add to your history. From all the info I have collected about polio, there is 95% who don't come down with ANY symptoms at all. Then the other 5% show flu like symptoms. But polio is also very contagious, so if someone were to accidently infect several people with polio, it could spread across the nation. Which is what happened on no less than FOUR different occasions! The first was in 1916...

"One modern-day theory is that the 1916 epidemic was caused by a “mixed virus” (MV strain) of polio that had escaped from the Rockefeller Institute, which was then located just three miles from the epicenter of the outbreak at 63rd Street and York Avenue in Manhattan. It was here that Dr. Simon Flexner, the first director of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, was conducting studies by transferring spinal cord tissue containing the polio virus from one Rhesus monkey’s spinal cord to another...http://frenchhatchingcat.com/tag/polio-epidemic-of-1916/

Dr. H.V. Wyatt published a document in 2011 discussing the possibility that a highly virulent laboratory engineered strain of poliovirus “escaped” from the Rockefeller laboratories. Just what exactly could have escaped from the lab is unknown. Also noted by Dr Wyatt is the number of children age 2 yr affected was the highest ever recorded; the case fatality rate of 25% was the highest ever recorded [certainly higher than natural wild type polio virus which is less than one percent];

The 1916 New York City Epidemic of Poliomyelitis: Where did the Virus Come From?

The Open Vaccine Journal, 2011, 4: 13-17

Abstract:

Previous accounts of the 1916 devastating epidemic have been faulty. The unique features of the epidemic and its sudden appearance have never been explained. A New York laboratory was passaging poliovirus in primate brains, a technique which increased pathogenicity. I propose that highly virulent virus escaped and caused the epidemic. Scientists, technical and animal house staff were unaware that they could be infected by poliovirus which could then infect others. All laboratory workers must be constantly reminded of the dangers which can arise from the escape of pathogens from their work.

H.V. Wyatt

Electronic publication date 24/6/2011
[DOI: 10.2174/1875035401104010013]

The second and third outbreaks were caused by two Dr's trying to invent a vaccine for polio...."1935 - Physicians Maurice Brodie and John Kollmer compete against each other, with each trying to be the first to develop a successful polio vaccine. Field trials fail with disastrous results as the vaccines are blamed for causing many cases of polio, some of which are fatal.

At New York University, Maurice Brodie, MD (1903-1939), a young researcher, prepared a killed poliovirus vaccine, testing it on chimpanzees, on himself, and finally on children. He enrolled about 11,000 individuals (in both control and vaccine groups) in his trial.

Meanwhile, John Kolmer, MD, of Temple University in Philadelphia developed an attenuated poliovirus vaccine, which he tested in about 10,000 children. The tests proved a disaster. Several subjects died of polio, and many were paralyzed, made ill, or suffered allergic reactions to the vaccines." From The History Of Vaccines

And the fourth outbreak was caused from the Cutter Incident that you have already mentioned.

Another reason why so many children were affected with the worst kind of polio, bulbar, was because of tonsillectomies...

"Between 1915 and 1960's, tonsillectomy was the most frequently performed surgical procedure in the United States. Tonsils were thought to be a "portal of infection", even though there was little evidence to support this theory.
(Journal of American Medicine & Allied Sciences, Oct. 2007).

Tonsillectomy and Poliomyelitis: The likelihood of bulbar involvement in people who have undergone tonsillectomy may be three or four times as great as in one whose tonsils are in situ. This higher proportion of bulbar cases in a person who has had a tonsillectomy occurs at all ages regardless of the time elapsed since the operation."

(American Public Health Association, August, 1954).

Persons at greater risk for serious neurological damage during epidemics due to lowered immunity included those who had recent inoculations or recent operations, especially removal of tonsils and adenoids (because the virus invades the body through the mouth and multiplies in the throat)"
(FDA Consumer, June 1991).

Here are some more simian viruses that were found in the first polio vaccines..

1956--
Scientists report the discovery of eight more monkey viruses in monkey kidney cells SV1, SV2, SV4, SV5, SV6, SV11, SV12, SV15. The scientists wrote that “Numerous filterable, transferable cytopathogenic agents other than poliovirus were also encountered (in the poliovirus vaccine)...The greatest significance of these viruses has been their appearance in tissue cultures used to produce and to test poliomyelitis vaccine”.

--Robert N. Hull, et al., New Viral Agents Recovered From Tissue Cultures of Monkey Kidney Cells, American Journal of Hygiene, 1956, Vol. 63, pp. 204-215

1958--
Scientists report the discovery of 20 more monkey viruses from monkey kidney cells (SV16, SV17, SV18, SV19, SV20, SV23, SV25, SV26, SV27, SV28, SV29, SV30, SV31, SV32, SV33, SV34, SV35, SV36, SV37, SV59). The scientists state, “As long as primary monkey-kidney cultures are used in the production and testing of virus vaccines the problem of simian virus contamination will remain...the possible virulence of these viruses for man remained unknown…”

--Robert N. Hull, et al., New Viral Agents Recovered From Tissue Cultures of Monkey Kidney Cells, American Journal of Hygiene, 1958, Vol. 68, pp. 31-44

And the SV40 virus is a STD, passed to others and our unborn children

Millions of people worldwide were inadvertently exposed to live simian virus 40 (SV40) between 1955 and 1963 through immunization with SV40-contaminated polio vaccines. Although the prevalence of SV40 infections in humans is not known, numerous studies suggest that SV40 is a pathogen resident in the human population today. SV40 is a potent DNA tumor virus that is known to induce primary brain cancers, bone cancers, mesotheliomas, and lymphomas in laboratory animals.

We conclude that SV40 is significantly associated with some types of Non Hodgkin Lymphomas and that lymphomas should be added to the types of human cancers associated with SV40.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15202523

It is well known that SV40 was administered to humans through contaminated vaccines, mainly anti-polio vaccines between 1955 and 1963 (3,4).

The possibility of a human-to-human transmission of SV40 was taken into consideration only recently (5). Indeed, SV40 DNA sequences were detected in normal and neoplastic tissues of persons too young (1 to 30 y) or too old (60 to 85 y) to have been vaccinated with SV40-contaminated polio vaccines (2). This finding may also explain the lack of difference in cancer incidence between individuals vaccinated with SV40-contaminated and SV40-free polio vaccines (6). SV40 sequences were detected in blood and sperm specimens of normal individuals and blood samples of patients (reviewed in [2]) while SV40 virions were found in urine samples (7),infection in humans. Support to the diffusion of SV40 in the human population is provided by the presence of SV40 sequences in human brain tumors, other neoplasms, and nor indicating that blood, sperm, and urine may represent routes/vehicles of transmission of SV40 horizontal mal tissues of children and adults (reviewed in 2;8–11); specific SV40-neutralizing antibodies in human sera (12,13); and SV40 large T antigen (Tag) antibodies in sera of mesothelioma patients (14). A scientific panel recently established the importance of assessing the ways of contagion and the mechanisms of SV40 transmission in humans (5).

How SV40 may establish a persistent infection in human cells is poorly understood.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1431373/

And here are recent studies showing SV40 does cause cancer....

Evidence for a role of the Simian Virus 40 in human breast carcinomas

Using immunohistochemistry, SV40 was detected in the tumor cells

Conclusions: This study is the first to demonstrate the presence of SV40 in human BC and provides data supporting a role for this virus in the pathogenesis of these tumors.

I understand your fear, I really do, but the instant you start quoting the research of Dr. Sherri Tenpenny you've lost the argument.

Dr. Tenpenny is not what most of us would call a medical doctor, is vehemently anti-vaccination and has not published any peer-reviewed science to back up her claims.

Sure, she's published, but there's a big difference between publishing and being vetted beforehand. I don't have a PhD but the book I recently co-authored was edited by two PhD scientists and several others contributed to it.

There's a video on this site where Dr. T is admits she isn't qualified.

Post Polio syndrome is mainly characterized by new weakening in muscles that were previously affected by the polio infection. Some basic researchers are studying the behavior of motor neurons many years after a polio attack. Some patients experience only minor Post Polio Syndrome Symptoms, While less common, others may develop visible muscle atrophy, or wasting.

Thank you for posting this excellent article. I am in the UK and the epidemic of chronic illness, allergies, autism and auto-immune conditions is epidemic - mostly as a result of vaccines without doubt. What we are seeing in children now is shocking but also young adults to who were subjected to constant vaccination in their school years including the appalling MMR. But the message is not getting through - so many parents brainwashed by the health authorities and threatened also with not being able to send their children to school if they do not do ALL vaccinations. Totally agree on everything you have said. It is a dangerous world for our young parents today both in the vaccine timetables but also the doctors who are shockingly unknowledgeable, have total inability to really think and have just learnt parrot fashion the ways of drugs and vaccines in medical school. Unfortunately and devastatingly, they did not learn the right information.
