yet another appalling fact (from Tiffany at http://dontwastethecrumbs.com/)…if our spices are not organic, they are just gross. The US FDA has a division called ASTA: The American Spice Trade Association. ASTA regulations allow up to 20% of the spice to be natural defects including rodent hair, poop, insects, and mold.
I actually read one of their documents about paprika – for which they allow 20% to be mold and 11 rodent hairs and 75 insect fragments per 25g!
I don't know about you, but when I sprinkle cinnamon onto my little girl's raw pancakes in the morning, I don't want 20% of the cinnamon to be rat hair, bug legs, mold and poop.
When you buy organic,
you are only getting the herb or spice on the label, and nothing more. There are a few other reasons too, but for me, this was all I needed. A few days prior I learned from http://wholenewmom.com/, that even raw almonds are processed with engine fuel. I thought that I knew pretty much when it came to organic living. I am often overwhelmed by the challenge of implementing what I know about whole alkaline foods and staying the course.
With knowledge comes responsibility
and for me this means 100% when it comes to feeding my babies...but this new info...I was sitting in the rocking chair about to nurse my 4 month old when learning just these 2 little facts felt so heavy…I need to make sure all our spices are organic spices (it turns out most of them are) and buy special almonds, too. I leaned back in the chair with a huge sigh and said
"Boy, it's hard to know so much!" and then I laughed out loud at how silly the statement sounded.
I look forward to learning more and sharing all I can with you, so that we can strive together on a quest for healthy living.
When feeling overwhelmed
about all these things everyone around me seems to be oblivious about (GMO's everywhere; New Biology; The Real Scoop on Essential Oils; Herbs vs. Homeopathics; What is really the deal with Rescue Remedy/Bach Flowers???; Why algae, fungus, and probiotics are acidifying to our bodies; Is it true babies need colds to build their immune system - NO!!! and here is why; Why I would leave the country before voluntarily vaccinating my family - against anything... - some of the upcoming blog posts to look for)
I quickly feel great relief as I look at my amazingly healthy children (my 2 year old has had 1 mild cold her entire life) and prefer the challenge over a family always fighting colds and flu, or worse. I know we are blessed beyond measure…part of that blessing is information, and that is what I want to share with you.
